Description:
Menstrual pads, designed for everyday use during menstruation, consist of several layers of cotton material. Additionally, they include a PUL (polyurethane laminate) layer that prevents liquid leakage while allowing the skin to breathe.
These pads are highly effective at absorbing menstrual flow and provide a safe option for those seeking a healthier and more secure alternative to disposable pads. Available materials include cotton poplin, bamboo terry cloth, and cotton jersey.
How to Wear:
When using menstrual pads, follow these guidelines:
- Material Placement: The side with patterns, bamboo terry cloth, or jersey fabric should be placed against the skin. Alternatively, the side that is stitched down the middle and shaped like the absorbent core should face the skin. Proper placement ensures optimal absorption.
- Back Layer: The back side of the pad, made of white cotton material, should be positioned against your underwear.
- Secure Attachment: Menstrual pads come with wings that can be fastened to your underwear, ensuring stability and preventing any shifting.
Remember to follow these steps for comfortable and effective use.
What is PUL?
PUL (Polyurethane Laminate) is a material commonly used in menstrual pads, and it plays a crucial role in their functionality. Let’s explore why PUL is significant:
- Waterproof Quality: PUL is known for its waterproof properties. It acts as a protective layer to prevent liquid (such as menstrual blood) from leaking through the bottom of the pad. This feature ensures that you stay dry and comfortable during your period.
- Versatility: PUL is not exclusive to menstrual pads; it is also used in other products like cloth diapers and as the waterproof layer in mattress pads. Its versatility makes it a reliable choice for managing menstrual flow.
- Safety Standards: High-quality PUL meets safety standards such as CSPIA (Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act) and Oeko Tec 100. These certifications ensure that the material is safe for use against the skin. Some PUL variants are even food-safe!
In summary, PUL provides the necessary protection against leaks while maintaining comfort and safety.
Before use:
- be sure to wash in the washing machine before use, for possible residues from sewing
- do not use when maintaining softener as this reduces their absorbency power. Ordinary detergent is recommended – powdered or liquid;
After use:
- put the pads in cold water with OXY powder (DM or Lidl), let them soak for several hours; avoid warm water in this procedure, as it seals blood stains;
- then rinse, remove any remaining stains with stain removal soap and wash in the washing machine with other laundry. (Note: Don't use a softener!)
If even after washing machine stains remain, dry them in the sun which is the best bleach.
It is not recommended to iron the pads because in this way the fibers are tightened and the pads are less absorbed. The best way to always have soft pads is to dry in the dryer!
